Mat

“Heads!” I call and pause, letting my face fall into an expression that’s vague and blank. “So, wait, is heads or tails bottoming first?”

Will falls for it and sighs a deep, long-suffering sigh. “Jesus, bro, I sincerely hope I’m not going to have to explain the mechanics of this to you.”

“What if he only wants to bang one of us toni…?”

“Is that your way of saying you’re volunteering as tribute?”

“N-no! I mean, yeah. Maybe?”

“Let’s not overthink it. Let’s just see what he wants to do and roll with it.”

“Okay.”

The buildup and the nerves and the fucking horrific week of waiting suddenly all become too much. They come at me from different angles and all but crush me. I glance at my phone to see the time. Trouble should be here any minute. That only makes it worse. My breathing grows shallow.

“Mattie.” Will’s voice is gravel. “Come ‘ere.” I get up and amble over to where he stands in the living room on legs that feel spongey and off-balance. I walk into his open arms and let myself crash into the brick wall of solid muscle and safety that is Will. I drop my forehead onto his chest and feel big hands circle the back of my neck. “Don’t worry, okay? I’ll be with you the whole time.”

A strange, weak sound leaves me. I look up at him to try to explain. I can’t find words, but I find Will. His dark hair is falling carelessly across his forehead. Obsidian eyes meet mine and change. They grow darker and deeper than I’ve ever seen them. They make me look harder. I teeter on the brink of fear. I’m not used to this. I’m not used to seeing Will in a way that isn’t familiar to me. His eyes track down my face. They wash over me like warm water. I feel it as surely as I’d feel his touch. They move slowly, spilling down my forehead, pausing briefly at my eyes and then heading south, stopping at my lips. He seems lost in thought and looks almost serene. Calm and at peace.

“What’s the time?” I ask, pulling away.

“Almost ten.”

“Do you think he’s going to be late?” Panic rises at the thought. There’s a slight chance I can make it until ten, but literally two or three minutes later, and I’ll lose it. “He can’t be late. I can’t handle it. I’m serious. If he’s late, I’m going to shit mys—”

“Matthew!” Will’s index finger is extended toward me. “Don’t you dare even think about finishing that sentence on a night like tonight.”

His face cracks into the kind of smile you don’t often see on him. One that’s so light and carefree it’s almost childlike. It makes a soft burst of laughter ripple out of me.

I freeze.

Will’s smile fades.

We both heard it. Light, agile footsteps on floor tile. The harbinger of Trouble.
